Frequently asked questions

When in pregnancy should I start hypnobirthing?+

Most people start between 20 and 32 weeks — this gives you plenty of time to practise the techniques. That said, it’s never too late: I’ve taught couples in their final weeks who still got huge benefit.

Does hypnobirthing only work for natural births?+

Not at all. Hypnobirthing is about feeling calm and in control whatever path your birth takes — including inductions, assisted births, and caesareans. The techniques work just as well in a theatre as they do in a birth pool.

Do I need my partner to take part?+

Partners are warmly welcomed and the course gives them a really clear role to play during birth — but you don’t need a partner to attend. A friend, family member, or doula can join you, or you’re very welcome on your own.

Is hypnobirthing actually hypnosis?+

It’s self-hypnosis — closer to deep relaxation or guided meditation than anything you’d see on stage. You’re fully aware and in control the entire time. Most people describe it as feeling beautifully calm.

Is hypnobirthing actually evidence-based?+

Yes. The techniques taught in hypnobirthing — controlled breathing, relaxation, and mindset work — are the same techniques used in hospital pain-management research and in obstetric psychology. Randomised studies have linked hypnobirthing preparation to reduced perception of pain, fewer medical interventions, and higher self-reported birth satisfaction. It is not an alternative to medical care; it works alongside it.

Can I use hypnobirthing in an NHS hospital birth?+

Absolutely. Most UK hypnobirths happen in NHS hospitals. Midwives are increasingly familiar with the techniques and generally welcome a calm, prepared couple. You bring your breathing and mindset; the hospital brings the medical team. The course teaches you how to work with midwives and advocate for your preferences — whatever the setting.

How much does a hypnobirthing course cost?+

The Group Hypnobirthing Course is £250 per couple (4 × 2.5-hour sessions). Private 1:1 courses start at £400. A 4-hour Intensive Antenatal Class is £180 per couple. See the Services page for the full list.

What is the difference between hypnobirthing and NHS antenatal classes?+

NHS antenatal classes focus on the medical and practical side of labour — the stages of birth, pain-relief options, what to pack, feeding options, nappies and swaddling. Hypnobirthing complements this with the mind-body side: breathing, visualisation, relaxation, mindset, and how to work with your body during contractions. Although the physiology side, comfort measures and birth preferences are also covered in my classes, most parents benefit from doing both.

Does hypnobirthing work if I have an induction or caesarean?+

Yes. The techniques are designed to help you stay calm and in control in any birth scenario — including inductions, assisted births, and caesareans (elected or unplanned). There is a dedicated Calm Caesarean Preparation course that adapts hypnobirthing specifically for abdominal birth, so the tools follow you wherever the day takes you.

Can hypnobirthing courses be done online?+

Private 1:1 sessions can run online if that suits your schedule better — over video call with the same content. Group courses run in person in East Sussex venues so you can connect with other local parents face to face. Either way you get the full toolkit, MP3 recordings, and ongoing support.

Is hypnobirthing only for first-time parents?+

No. Many parents come back for a second or third baby, either for a full refresher or a short top-up. If you've had a difficult first birth, hypnobirthing can be especially powerful for preparing differently this time. Previous birth trauma is welcomed — we talk through it and build a plan that fits where you are now.
