What is hypnobirthing and does it actually work?
By Suzie Peissel
Quick answer
What does "hypnobirthing" actually mean?
Hypnobirthing is a set of antenatal preparation techniques — primarily breathing patterns, guided relaxation, visualisation, and mindset work — that help expectant parents approach birth feeling informed, calm, and in charge. Despite the name, it is not stage hypnosis. It is closer to self-guided meditation, backed by how the body actually works in labour.
How does it work in practice?
During labour, stress hormones like adrenaline work against the hormones that progress birth (oxytocin, endorphins). The calmer you can stay, the more freely your body can do its job. Hypnobirthing techniques are tools for keeping stress down: specific breathing rhythms for different phases, physical relaxation cues, and a mindset toolkit for whatever the day brings.
Is there evidence it works?
Yes — multiple studies have shown hypnobirthing preparation is associated with reduced perception of pain during labour, lower use of medical pain relief, fewer assisted deliveries, and higher self-reported birth satisfaction. It does not guarantee a specific outcome, but it does reliably improve how prepared parents feel, which is itself one of the biggest predictors of a positive birth experience.
Who is it for?
First-time parents, second-time parents, partners, people planning water births, people planning caesareans, people hoping for home birth, people expecting a hospital birth. The core techniques adapt to whatever your birth looks like. It is especially valuable for parents who want to feel more in control of decisions during labour.
What does a typical course cover?
Over 4 × 2.5-hour sessions (group) or a condensed 4-hour intensive, you will typically work through:
- How the birthing body works physiologically
- Breathing techniques for each stage of labour
- Relaxation and visualisation practice (with take-home MP3s)
- Your rights, choices, and how to build a flexible birth plan
- How your birth partner supports you on the day
- What to expect afterwards
How much does it cost?
Group courses in Brighton and East Sussex are typically £250 per couple. Private 1:1 courses are £400 per couple. Shorter 4-hour intensives sit around £180. These are one-off costs that cover both of you and all materials.
Where can I learn more?
Have a look at the different course options on the Services page, or read about upcoming classes in your specific town: Brighton, Seaford, Newhaven, or Peacehaven. If you want a taster first, the free breathing guide and relaxation MP3 on the Resources page is a good start.
FAQ
Common questions
Is hypnobirthing safe?
Yes. It teaches breathing, relaxation, and mindset techniques — nothing that interferes with medical care. It works alongside any birth setting or type.
Do I need to do it with a partner?
No. A partner is warmly welcomed and gets a clear supportive role, but you can take the course solo or with a friend, family member, or doula.
When should I start?
Between 20 and 32 weeks is ideal, but it is never too late — some parents start in the last few weeks and still benefit enormously from an intensive session.
